Charleston -
Three unique public relations campaigns created by The Manahan Group won top honors at the 2010 West Virginia Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) awards.
The Manahan Group (TMG) was honored with a Crystal Award for creating a highly successful statewide campaign supporting health care reform in West Virginia. The effort was called West Virginians Campaign for a Healthy Future, and it brought together a coalition of partner groups that had for years been at odds over health care issues. The campaign was credited with passing legislation that one national advocate called "the most significant health care reform legislation passed by any state legislature this year."
TMG won Crystal Awards for two campaigns promoting SMART529, West Virginia’s College Savings Solution. One was for the When I Grow Up essay contest, a statewide contest for school children Kindgergarten through Fifth Grade. The contest awards $500 SMART529 accounts to 15 children statewide each year, and awards a $5,000 account to one of those children.
TMG was also honored with a Crystal Award for the creation of a holiday direct mail piece highlighting SMART529 and SMART529 donations as an excellent gift for children. The concept was to connect the direct mail to the SMART529 website by creating a direct mail piece that would entice recipients to go to the website. The direct mail had an image of a mysterious gift box and instructions on how to open it at www.SMART529.com.
The Manahan Group also won Honorable Mentions for the following efforts:
· Statewide PR efforts, UniCare Health Plan of West Virginia, Inc.—Community Relations
· SMARTFamily Newsletter, Hartford Life—External Communications
· Circle of Hope, UniCare Health Plan of West Virginia, Inc.—Special Events
· Capitol Market Green Chili Shoot-out Posters—Collateral Materials
· Covenant House Anti-Smoking Posters—Collateral Materials
"The Crystal Awards differ from other awards in the public relations and advertising industry in that they are judged on the results the work brings rather than just on the opinions of the judges," said TMG President and CEO George Manahan. Manahan is also president of the West Virginia Chapter of PRSA.
