Charleston, WV -

Gov. Bob Wise today announced that West Virginia received more than $10 million in tax amnesty payments.

As part of the 2004 Tax Amnesty program, introduced by Wise during this year's legislative session, taxpayers had until Nov. 1 to apply for amnesty.

"Not only did we hit the $10 million mark as expected, we exceeded it," Wise said. "In fact, money is still coming in."

More than 4,800 applications were received. Applicants with unpaid state taxes accrued after Jan. 1, 1986, and before Jan. 1, 2004, were required to pay only 50 percent of the interest owed. All other penalties and additions to the taxes were waived.

Anyone who was eligible for tax amnesty and did not take advantage of the program will have a 10 percent penalty added to their debt.
